For many men who have tried and failed to get erectile dysfunction treatments, they have found them even more effective than Viagra or the other two.
However, despite their success rates, some men have been left wondering, “does it work” and “does it make you last longer?”
A new study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, found that the two medications have very similar effects on men’s sex lives.
“It may be that there is no ‘sig’ in the medication mix,” study author, Dr. David Schaffer, a urologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, told Shots. “The idea is that the medication will work for you, but there are also other things that will work, too.”
The study, published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine, was part of a larger, funded by the drug maker Pfizer Inc.
“This is a new study that looked at the effects of two prescription drugs, Viagra and Cialis, on men taking either of those medications,” Dr. Schaffer said in an email. “This was the first study to look at the drug combinations and was designed to assess the effects of Viagra and Cialis on men’s erectile function.”
Cialis is a popular brand-name erectile dysfunction medication that contains the active ingredient tadalafil. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
It is the most commonly used drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, with many men reporting improvements in their ability to get or maintain an erection.

Dr. Schaffer said there are several reasons men who use both Viagra and Cialis might have problems getting or maintaining an erection.
Viagra, for example, is a popular brand-name erectile dysfunction medication, while Cialis, the generic version of the drug, is available as a tablet. There is also a lower likelihood for men who take a pill or tablet to get or maintain an erection.
“For men who have not tried any of these medications and have experienced adverse side effects, they may have been able to find a more satisfactory sex life and may be able to enjoy the benefits of these medications,” the authors concluded.
Schaffer added that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to sexual health, but the study found that men who take both Viagra and Cialis have a slightly lower risk of a side effect, although they do have slightly greater benefit, which could be due to a combination of factors.
